Earlier Report Observations

Sheep and goat meat production in Tajikistan is overwhelmingly carried out by small-scale family and dehkan farms, which account for over 80% of sheep and goats and 94% of cattle. This structure provides a steady base for output but has historically limited large-scale expansion. After a modest rise in 2019, production volume dipped in 2020 and 2021 before experiencing strong growth in 2022 and 2023.

The production decline in 2020 coincided with a reduction in imports of live sheep and goats, which tightened the domestic supply of animals for slaughter. The market rebounded sharply from 2022 onward, primarily driven by a consistent increase in livestock herds. Specifically, the sheep and goat population grew by 5.1% and cattle by 4.5% in 2022, directly supporting a production increase to 192.7 thousand tons that year and further growth to 210.4 thousand tons in 2023.

While output has grown, the market's structure poses ongoing challenges. The lack of specialized farms for meat breeds and a continued reliance on imported animal feed contribute to higher production costs and influence consumer prices. These factors shape the market's cost dynamics and long-term development potential.
