Between 2018 and 2020, Sudan's sheep and goat meat market volume grew from 764.8 thousand tonnes to 769.7 thousand tonnes, with production also rising gradually. This growth occurred despite significant challenges from armed conflicts between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which disrupted slaughterhouse operations in Khartoum, endangered livestock transportation routes, and caused losses in animal herds.

The market contracted in the following years, with volume falling to 752.7 thousand tonnes in 2021 and further to 740.6 thousand tonnes in 2022. This decline coincided with a sharp increase in exports, which reached 11.7 thousand tonnes in 2022, reducing domestic availability.

A partial recovery was observed in 2023, as the market volume rebounded to 754.2 thousand tonnes. This turnaround was supported by direct state intervention, where the Ministry of Supply released large quantities of fresh and frozen meat into consumer complexes and affiliated company outlets to regulate the market and ensure supply at accessible prices.
