Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, camel meat production in Sudan increased gradually from 161.4 thousand tonnes to 163.7 thousand tonnes. This growth was supported by a government law that banned the export of female camels, ensuring more animals remained available for domestic slaughter. The sector also benefited from ongoing institutional support, including financing from the Livestock Bank and policy oversight from the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries.
Production dipped to 160.9 thousand tonnes in 2021 and fell more sharply to 156.4 thousand tonnes in 2022, when rising global feed prices significantly raised the cost of raising camels. The market also adapted to new packaging requirements and stricter distribution regulations aimed at improving meat quality. By 2023, output recovered to 159.2 thousand tonnes, as state investments in new production facilities began to take effect and producers adjusted to the higher input costs.
