Earlier Report Observations

The Sudanese poultry market expanded from 140,000 tonnes in 2018 to over 172,000 tonnes in 2022, driven by significant industry investments and new production capacity. Key developments included the expansion of the state-affiliated Miko for Poultry company and the entry of Wadam Food into the market with a large project aimed at producing 30,000 tonnes of organic poultry meat. This period also saw the rapid growth of small-scale poultry farms across Khartoum and other regions, supported by local feed mills, which collectively contributed to rising output.

After a period of stabilization in 2021, production climbed again in 2022, reaching a peak of 171,200 tonnes. The market's overall volume followed a similar upward trajectory, supported by the underlying expansion of domestic production facilities that had been established in prior years.

A severe contraction occurred in 2023, with production falling to 143,700 tonnes and market size dropping to 145,400 tonnes. This sharp decline was a direct consequence of the civil war that disrupted operations, leading to the two-year stoppage of major producers like Miko for Poultry. In response, 2024 saw the government channel significant volumes of imported frozen poultry, including 25,000 tonnes from Brazil, into consumer complexes to secure supply, while companies like Nile Sudanese Poultry and Miko began restarting operations to rebuild local capacity.
