In 2020, the region produced 177.2 thousand tons, marking a modest increase of 4.6% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 4.9%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.6%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 169.4 thousand tons, while the largest year-on-year drop occurred in 2018 with a decrease of 5.8%.

In 2020, the value of sesame oil and fractions production in Southeast Asia was $907 million, representing a significant decline of 15.5% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, Southeast Asia's sesame oil and fractions exports were distributed across numerous countries. Japan accounted for 11.1% of exports, Australia for 8.8%, and the United Kingdom for 7.0%. Together, these three countries represented just 26.9% of total export flows, indicating a highly diversified export structure.
