Earlier Report Observations

The sesame oil market volume in the SADC region underwent significant fluctuations from 2018 to 2023. After starting at 38 531 t in 2018, it contracted to 29 382 t in 2019 before surging to a peak of 43 558 t in 2020. This was followed by a sustained downward trend, with the market falling to 37 612 t in 2021, 24 063 t in 2022, and 21 528 t in 2023.

The market's volatility was closely tied to shifts in domestic production, which mirrored the same pattern with a high of 47 035 t in 2020. Trade dynamics also played a role, as a sharp increase in exports to 3 928 t in 2020 reduced the net supply available domestically, while import volumes remained relatively stable below 1 000 t for most of the period.
