Earlier Report Observations

The sesame oil market in Bangladesh opened the period with a strong volume of 7,460 t in 2018, supported by a peak in domestic production. This output was driven by favorable agricultural conditions and an increased cultivation area for sesame seeds. However, market volume fell to 5,609 t in 2019 and further to 5,058 t in 2020, as production momentum faltered due to monsoon variability affecting regional seed supply and broader global supply chain disruptions.

Market volume gradually declined to 4,842 t in 2021, a period marked by consolidation within the edible oil refining industry that reduced the number of active processors. A partial recovery to 5,208 t was recorded in 2022, a year that also saw a diversification of countries exporting sesame oil to Bangladesh. The market then contracted sharply to 2,975 t in 2023, a year of significant structural change characterized by the entry of over 45 new cold-press sesame oil startups and the major consolidation move by BEOL, which took over the operations of Shun Shing Edible Oil Ltd.
