Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2023, the market volume for sesame oil and fractions in Costa Rica showed significant fluctuations. It peaked at 372.8 metric tons in 2019 before dropping sharply to 292.2 metric tons in 2020, a decline coinciding with the global COVID-19 pandemic which disrupted supply chains and dampened demand. The market recovered over the next two years, reaching 353.8 metric tons in 2022, but fell again to 267.8 metric tons in 2023.
In 2024, imports of sesame oil rose to 162.8 metric tons, supported by global factors such as reduced tariffs in some Asian countries and higher international sesame oil prices. Domestically, regulatory developments shaped the industry: in November 2024, the Ministry of Health issued a new regulation for the prevention, preparedness and response to chemical accidents, enhancing safety management for oils and related products. Costa Rica also successfully closed its post-accession OECD assessment for chemicals, strengthening the regulatory framework for oil production and trade.
The market is further influenced by growing consumer preference for natural and healthy products, which sustains demand for sesame oil. Updated national norms permit the production of oils from authorized oilseeds, including sesame, facilitating local manufacturing and aligning with regional technical standards for vegetable oils.
