Earlier Report Observations
Beef, sheep, and goat fat production in Bangladesh began a steady climb from 2018, supported by sustained government initiatives to develop the livestock sector. A $500 million financing agreement with the World Bank in 2017 aimed at improving productivity and market access for millions of farmers, laying a foundation for growth. This was accompanied by the entry of new agribusiness firms marketing recognized livestock brands domestically. Concurrently, increasing production of animal feed provided a more stable input base for herds. The market faced a temporary disruption in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic affected supply chains, but the adoption of improved feeding and management technologies helped mitigate the impact on output.
The post-pandemic period saw a continued expansion, driven by recovering domestic demand and ongoing public programs to enhance livestock value chains. A significant driver from 2022 was the record expansion of large-scale animal feed production, which reached over 6.5 million tons annually, directly supporting herd productivity. That year also saw the peak in fat imports, influenced by global trade flows, though the Russia-Ukraine war simultaneously increased feed raw material costs. Government promotion of crossbred sheep rearing as a new economic opportunity, backed by soft loans, added momentum to the sector. While import volumes moderated after 2022, domestic production maintained its upward trajectory through 2023.
Throughout the period, growth was further underpinned by efforts to improve product quality and access to international markets, including a focus on Halal certification. The consistent increase in market volume, from 22,926 t in 2018 to 25,068 t in 2023, occurred despite persistent challenges such as animal disease incidence and feed limitations, highlighting the sector's resilience bolstered by institutional support and private investment in feed manufacturing.
