Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for semi-milled or wholly milled rice in Kazakhstan stood at 165.8 thousand tons in 2018. It grew to 185.6 thousand tons in 2019, supported by increasing production. However, a sharp contraction to 121.9 thousand tons followed in 2020, primarily due to water shortages in key rice-growing regions like Kyzylorda and Turkistan, which reduced sown areas and yields.

State support programs for rice farming helped the market recover to 133.7 thousand tons in 2021. The following year, volume dipped slightly to 129.4 thousand tons, during which temporary export restrictions were introduced to secure domestic supply until the end of 2024.

Market volume rose again to 152.4 thousand tons in 2023, with domestic production covering about 97% of local demand for husked and broken rice. Into 2024, industry development measures continued, while rising costs for fuel, fertilizers, and imported machinery kept pressure on production expenses.
