Following a two-year decline, Malaysia's production of semi-milled or wholly milled rice rebounded in 2021. Output reached 1 489 thousand tonnes, marking a moderate increase of 8.9% compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, however, production overall decreased by 3.2%, with an average annual decline of 1.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 1 367 thousand tonnes, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2019 with a 7.1% decrease.

After two years of decline, the value of semi-milled or wholly milled rice production in Malaysia rose in 2021. Output was valued at 601.8 million US dollars, representing a substantial year-on-year increase of 12.7%. Over the 2018-2021 period, production value fell by 9.5%, with an average annual decrease of 3.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 534.0 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 13.6% that year.

Malaysia's exports of semi-milled or wholly milled rice grew for the third consecutive year in 2021. The country shipped 96 thousand tonnes, a sharp increase of 103.0% compared to the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, exports surged by 392.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 70.1%.

For the third year in a row, the value of semi-milled or wholly milled rice exports from Malaysia increased in 2021. Export value reached 38.9 million US dollars, reflecting a significant rise of 110.1% compared to 2020. From 2018 to 2021, export value grew by 360.3%, equivalent to an average annual rate of 66.4%.

Throughout the 2018-2021 period, Indonesia was the nearly exclusive buyer of semi-milled or wholly milled rice from Malaysia, representing 96.8% of total export value.

After two years of growth, Malaysia's imports of semi-milled or wholly milled rice declined in 2021. Import volumes amounted to 1 129 thousand tonnes, a modest decrease of 5.6% compared to the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, imports increased by 41.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 12.4%. The peak import volume was recorded in 2020 at 1 197 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 24.9% that year.

From 2018 to 2021, Vietnam, Thailand, and India were consistently the main sources of Malaysia's semi-milled or wholly milled rice imports by volume. Vietnam accounted for 34.9% of imports, Thailand for 24.0%, and India for 21.6%, together making up 80.5% of total import flows.

Following two years of increase, the value of semi-milled or wholly milled rice imports into Malaysia fell in 2021. Import value stood at 566.0 million US dollars, showing a slight drop of 2.6% compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, import value rose by 40.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2020 at 580.9 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 29.1% that year.

Between 2018 and 2021, Vietnam, India, and Thailand emerged as the primary markets for Malaysia's semi-milled or wholly milled rice imports by value. Vietnam represented 34.2% of import value, India 22.8%, and Thailand 21.6%, collectively accounting for 78.6% of total import flows.
