Between 2018 and 2023, the Iranian market for semi-milled or wholly milled rice experienced considerable volatility in total volume. Starting at 2 304 thousand tons in 2018, it edged up to 2 333 thousand tons in 2019 before contracting sharply to 1 849 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 1 777 thousand tons in 2021. A dramatic rebound followed in 2022, with the market reaching 2 727 thousand tons, only to drop again to 2 009 thousand tons in 2023.

This volatility was primarily driven by wide swings in import volumes, which ranged from a high of 1 783 thousand tons in 2022 to a low of 752 thousand tons in 2023. Domestic production, in contrast, demonstrated a steady upward trajectory, increasing from 699 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 260 thousand tons in 2023, partially offsetting the import fluctuations.
