Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for semi-milled or wholly milled rice in Guinea declined from 1 340 thousand tons to 1 180 thousand tons. The launch of the AgriFARM project in 2018, aimed at increasing farm household incomes and improving market access, helped boost domestic production from 674 thousand tons in 2018 to 847 thousand tons in 2019. However, in 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and reduced production to 556 thousand tons, leading to a drop in total market volume despite rising imports.
In 2021, market volume surged to 1 428 thousand tons, driven primarily by a jump in imports to 912 thousand tons, while production fell to 516 thousand tons. In the following years, strengthened government policies to support rice farming aided a recovery in production to 570 thousand tons in 2022 and 588 thousand tons in 2023. The signing of a protocol between the government and the private sector in 2023 to stabilize prices and provide tax exemptions contributed to a moderate market volume increase to 1 434 thousand tons.
