From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for semi-milled or wholly milled rice in Ghana expanded significantly, from 726 thousand tons to over 1.18 million tons. This growth was driven by the national production strategy, which boosted domestic output, and sustained consumer demand as rice became the country's second most consumed cereal. The continuation of the production strategy in 2019 further supported market expansion.

After peaking in 2020, the market volume contracted to 886 thousand tons in 2021, primarily due to a sharp fall in imports, but then recovered in the following years. By 2023, the market reached 1.17 million tons, partly supported by the African Development Bank's REWARD program, which strengthened climate-resilient rice value chains in key Ghanaian regions.
