Earlier Report Observations

The market for salted, brined, dried or smoked pork in South-eastern Asia demonstrated initial stability in the late 2010s, underpinned by rising consumer demand fueled by growing disposable incomes, urbanization, and a shift in preferences toward convenient processed meat products. New players entered the regional market in 2019, intensifying competition and product innovation while the overall market volume held steady. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 triggered a significant market expansion to 7 758 t, as logistical disruptions and food security concerns led consumers to stock up on long-lasting preserved meats like salted and smoked pork.

Following the 2020 peak, market volume adjusted to 7 406 t in 2021, reflecting a gradual post-pandemic normalization of supply chains and consumption patterns. Strengthened competition from large state-owned and private companies expanding their production capacity, coupled with tighter regional regulations on labeling and traceability, contributed to renewed market growth, reaching 7 891 t in 2022. By 2023, the market experienced a moderate contraction to 7 673 t, concluding the period with an overall larger volume compared to its starting point.
