Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2022, Rwanda's coniferous roundwood market volume remained stable at approximately 98 000 m³, supported by consistent domestic production and negligible official imports. During this period, the market was characterized by a heavy reliance on imported quality timber from the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo for furniture making, alongside pervasive informal cross-border trade and illicit timber trafficking, though these flows were not reflected in the official statistics for this specific product.

In 2023, the market volume expanded to 112 933 m³, primarily driven by a surge in official imports, which reached 14 933 m³. This increase coincided with policy shifts towards sustainable forest management, including greater private-sector involvement in state forest management and efforts to reduce household reliance on firewood by promoting alternative fuels like cooking gas and biogas.

In 2024, imports continued to rise, reaching 19 924 m³. The year also saw the launch of the Green Amayaga forest restoration project, a six-year initiative aimed at restoring natural forests in the Southern Province to enhance biodiversity and climate resilience. Meanwhile, illegal timber trafficking from the DRC remained a persistent challenge, and the government continued to strengthen transparency in public procurement processes.
