This expansion occurred despite a temporary contraction in 2020, after which the market recovered and reached its highest level by the end of the period.

Domestic production of roundwood coniferous gradually declined from 9.7 million m³ in 2018 to 9.5 million m³ in 2023. Meanwhile, import volumes showed considerable variability, culminating in a sharp increase to 5.2 million m³ in 2023, which contributed significantly to the total market volume that year.

India's roundwood coniferous production declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 9,631 K m³, which was nearly unchanged from the 2019 level.

Exports coniferous roundwood from India

Exports in kind, K m³

India's roundwood coniferous exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports stood at 0.4 K m³, representing a 4.6% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 43%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -17.1%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 1 K m³, which saw a 6.6% increase from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 44.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Qatar and Nepal continued to be the top markets for India's roundwood coniferous exports in volume terms, together accounting for 81.6% of total flows, while other partners played a supplementary role.

Exports in value, M $ US

After a two-year uptick, India's roundwood coniferous exports in value terms declined. In 2020, exports totaled 0.1 million US dollars, marking a contraction of 57.4% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 26.2%, with a CAGR of -9.7%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 0.1 million US dollars, which saw a 35.7% increase from the year before.

From 2017 to 2020, Qatar (51.7% of exports in value terms), Mauritius (25.2%), and Nepal (12.7%) remained the principal buyers of roundwood coniferous from India, jointly accounting for 89.6% of total export value.

The market showed signs of volatility over the observed period. India imported a total of 1,087 K m³ of roundwood coniferous in 2020, showing an abrupt decline of 37.1% from 2019. The minimum import volume was recorded in 2017, while the maximum was in 2019 at 1,728 K m³, resulting in a 6.1-fold variation between these years. The largest increase occurred in 2018, with a rise of 312.1%.
