From 2018 to 2019, coniferous roundwood production in Asia remained at a high level near 158 million m³, supported by steady demand from the construction sector due to global construction recovery and advancing urbanization. Growing environmental awareness and the spread of forest certification schemes like FSC and PEFC further stimulated demand for sustainably managed timber. In 2019, continued demand from furniture manufacturing and rising housing needs, fueled by population growth and disposable income, helped maintain stable output despite minor supply chain frictions arising from international trade tensions.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused temporary supply chain disruptions, contributing to a production decline to 155.3 million m³. Concurrently, the tightening of environmental regulations made certification for sustainable wood products a direct factor for competitiveness. The subsequent rebound in 2021, with production reaching 161.5 million m³, was driven by major companies investing in new production facilities and expanding capacity, alongside increasing consumer preference for eco-labeled wood products amid global logistic challenges.

Between 2022 and 2023, production gradually decreased to 155.5 million m³. Rising international raw material and energy costs increased manufacturing expenses, applying downward pressure on output. This period also saw strengthened policy support for sustainable building materials, which improved market access for roundwood products. The market continued to evolve with technological innovations leading to more durable and functional wood products, such as moisture- and fire-resistant plywood, and a diversification of raw material sources signaled by growing wood pellet imports.

Asia's roundwood coniferous production has declined for the second year in a row. In 2019, production stood at 157.8 million cubic meters, but by 2020 it had dropped slightly to 155.3 million cubic meters, representing a 1.6% decrease. The peak was reached in 2018 with 158.7 million cubic meters, which marked a 1.9% increase from the previous year.
