Earlier Report Observations

The wood fuel market in India saw consumption decline from 740 million m³ in 2018 to 669 million m³ in 2020. This reduction coincided with supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, which hampered logging and processing operations, constraining available supply. In the preceding year, a domestic LPG supply crisis had intensified demand for fuelwood as households turned to this traditional alternative, supporting a high market volume initially.

From 2021 onward, the market began a steady recovery, reaching 703 million m³ by 2023. The rebound was primarily fueled by recurring shortages of LPG and sustained high energy prices, which made wood fuel a more accessible energy source for many consumers. During this period, government policies also aimed at strengthening sustainable wood use and promoting agroforestry to address underlying supply challenges.
