The market for roasted, not decaffeinated coffee in Italy showed significant volatility from 2018 to 2024. The introduction of the EU Acrylamide Regulation in April 2018 set new quality control requirements for roasters. By 2020, a shift in consumer preferences towards single-serve capsules became a key growth driver, contributing to an increase in market volume to 377 thousand tons.

After a sharp rise, market volume contracted in 2021, then recovered in 2022. In 2023, a difficult international environment led to a decline in green coffee exports, putting pressure on domestic supply and contributing to a drop in market volume. By 2024, logistical issues in the Suez Canal, the threat of US trade tariffs, and reduced yields in major producing countries increased raw material costs, leading to a slight decrease in market volume to 239 thousand tons, while the share of single-serve formats continued to grow.

Italy's production of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee increased in value after two years of decline. In 2020, output reached 4,795 million US dollars, marking a strong 15.3% gain over the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 13.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 4,159 million US dollars, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 24.4%.

Italy's production volume of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, 595.8 thousand tonnes were produced, representing a 27.7% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 6.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.1%. The minimum volume was recorded in 2018 at 386.7 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 39.1%.

After two years of growth, Italy's exports of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee in volume terms declined. In 2020, exports stood at 237.1 thousand tonnes, showing a gradual 6.3% decrease from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 16%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.1%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 253.1 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 17.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy's exports of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee in volume terms were distributed across a wide range of partner countries. Germany accounted for 22.8% of exports, France for 8.9%, and Austria for 5.8%, together making up just 37.5% of total flows.

In 2020, exports reached 1,619 million US dollars, a reduction of 1.1% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 5.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 1.8%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 1,638 million US dollars, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 4.4%.

The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 1.1%, and the largest increase was in 2019 at 33.2%.
