The market volume of roasted decaffeinated coffee in the Netherlands surged in 2020 to 6 175 t, a 30% increase from the previous year, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic which stimulated home coffee consumption and boosted online coffee subscriptions. In the preceding years, the market showed stability at around 4 700 t, supported by growing consumer interest in decaffeinated varieties and the entry of new small-scale roasters.

After the pandemic peak, the market volume declined, reaching 3 982 t in 2024. This downward trend was linked to substantial coffee price increases due to climate-related supply issues and tightening regulatory pressure, including the European Green Deal and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which raised compliance costs for importers. Despite these headwinds, demand for decaffeinated coffee remained resilient, aided by improved decaffeination methods, allowing for a partial recovery to 4 598 t in 2023.

Between 2017 and 2020, production decreased by 63.4%, which translates to an annualized rate of 28.5%. The largest decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 69.2%.
