In 2018, the government of Guinea-Bissau lowered the official price for the widely consumed broken rice variety 'nhelem' to improve consumer access, but retail traders refused to comply, creating local market tension. Despite this, the total rice market volume grew from 285 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 354 thousand tonnes in 2020, driven largely by a surge in imports, which reached 156 thousand tonnes in 2020.

Following the 2020 peak, the market contracted to 276 thousand tonnes in 2022, primarily due to a steep drop in imports of over 100 thousand tonnes. By 2023, the market volume recovered to 346 thousand tonnes as imports rose again to 119 thousand tonnes and domestic production continued its steady growth, reaching 226 thousand tonnes.

In 2024, congestion at the Port of Bissau was cited as a cause for temporary rice shortages in the national market. During the same year, the local company Wisun Agrotech established itself as a producer of quality rice, working with local cooperatives and farmers.
