The market for milled and broken rice in Guinea-Bissau showed considerable movement between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 217 thousand tonnes, market volume climbed to a high of 280 thousand tonnes in 2020 before contracting sharply to 192.6 thousand tonnes in 2022. Domestic production, however, demonstrated consistent growth throughout the period.

A strong market rebound occurred in 2023, with volume recovering to 261.5 thousand tonnes. This expansion was primarily driven by the entry of a new domestic producer, Wisun Agrotech, which increased the supply of locally processed rice. Market conditions were also shaped by government price interventions for the popular 'nhelém' broken rice variety, affecting consumer access and trade dynamics.
