Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2021, rice production in Guinea increased from 2 340 thousand tons to 2 840 thousand tons. This growth was supported by state-led initiatives, including the preparation of a five-year rice value chain development project and the modernization of processing equipment through the expansion of Engelberg huller imports. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 prompted additional government support for the agricultural sector, helping to sustain production and market volume, which reached 3 779 thousand tons in 2021.
A significant acceleration in production occurred from 2022 to 2023, with output rising to 3 535 thousand tons. This surge was primarily driven by protocols signed between the government and the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Handicrafts of Guinea, which introduced tax and customs exemptions on rice to incentivize local production and ensure market supply. These measures reduced rice imports and contributed to a rise in total market volume to 4 404 thousand tons in 2023, supported by the ongoing AgriFARM project and strengthened regulatory frameworks for budget management.
