From 2018 to 2019, the Egyptian raw silk market expanded from 1 983 kg to 2 397 kg, driven by the entry of new local companies and state policies supporting domestic textile production and investment.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted global supply chains, halting imports and reducing the market to 1 500 kg. Government export initiatives and the launch of innovative products helped recovery to 2 000 kg in 2021, before global supply chain disruptions and rising raw material prices caused a sharp drop to 1 000 kg in 2022.

A modest recovery followed in 2023, with the market reaching 1 060 kg, sustained entirely by domestic production after imports ceased.

In 2020, Egypt produced 1 500 kg of raw silk, showing only minor changes compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 36.4%, which translates to an average annual increase of 10.9%. The highest production level was reached in 2019 at 1 500 kg, with the most significant year-on-year growth of 20.0% also occurring that year.

In 2019, Egypt imported 897 kg of raw silk from abroad, marking a 22.4% increase from the previous year. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2019, imports fell by 30.5%, averaging an annual decline of 11.4%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 733 kg, which also saw the sharpest drop of 43.2% compared to 2017.

From 2017 to 2020, Uzbekistan and Pakistan were the primary sources for Egypt's raw silk imports in volume terms, together accounting for 84.8% of total imports. The remaining share was distributed among various other markets.

The lowest value was in 2018 at 50 048 US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 32.8% compared to 2017.
