The raw silk market in CIS countries experienced steady growth from 2018 to 2023. Market volume increased by 26%, rising from 1 418 t to 1 794 t, while the market value expanded by 49%, from $58.1 million to $86.5 million. This upward trend was supported by a general rise in domestic production, which grew from 2 030 t to 2 257 t over the same period.

A notable shift in trade flows contributed to the larger domestic market. Export volumes declined significantly after 2019, falling from 812 t to 463 t in 2023, which redirected more silk toward local consumption. Imports remained minimal throughout and ceased entirely after 2021, leaving the market reliant on domestic output.

Raw silk production in the CIS has grown for the third consecutive year. In 2019, production remained stable, and in 2020, it reached 2 283 tonnes, showing little change from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production increased by 60.5%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 17.1%.

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. From the low in 2017 to the high in 2019, volumes varied by a factor of 1.8. In 2020, exported raw silk volumes from the CIS totalled 536.3 tonnes, marking a decline of 34.0% year-over-year. The peak was in 2019 at 812.3 tonnes, which saw the largest increase of 31.4%. From 2017 to 2020, Iran, China, and Vietnam formed the core group of markets for exports in kind. Iran accounted for 34.2% of exports, China for 23.2%, and Vietnam for 17.7%, together representing 75.0% of total flows.

After a two-year increase, the volume of raw silk exports from the CIS declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 18 841 thousand US dollars, down by 40.5% compared to the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 31 648 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase of 25.0% in that year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 18.8%, equating to an annualized rate of -6.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Iran, China, and Vietnam were the main markets for exports in value terms. Iran represented 34.2% of exports, China 24.2%, and Vietnam 17.3%, together accounting for 75.7% of total flows.

Imports raw silk to CIS

Imports in kind, t

Raw silk import volume in the CIS increased for the second consecutive year. In 2019, imports rose by 24.3%, and in 2020, they reached 8.6 tonnes, up by 10.3% compared to 2019. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 6.3 tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 6.6%. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 28.2%, with an annualized growth rate of 8.6%.

Raw silk import volume in the CIS increased for the second consecutive year. In 2019, imports grew by 15.0%, and in 2020, they reached 339 thousand US dollars, up by 0.7% year-over-year. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 293 thousand US dollars, which experienced the largest decline of 19.0%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 6.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.1%.
