Earlier Report Observations

The Asian raw silk market contracted significantly from 150.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 82.3 thousand tons in 2021. This decline was primarily driven by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which caused severe global supply chain disruptions and reduced demand, despite ongoing government support initiatives like the Catalytic Development Programme.

A recovery began in 2022, with the market volume reaching 88.4 thousand tons by 2023. This turnaround was fueled by the implementation of the Silk Samagra-2 scheme, which provided targeted funding to major producing regions. Increased adoption of automation, such as automatic reeling machines, simultaneously boosted the output of high-quality bivoltine silk.

In 2024, policy efforts remained focused on digitalization and sustaining the Silk Samagra-2 scheme, while the industry continued to navigate global supply chain fluctuations. These measures aimed to consolidate the market's recovery and strengthen its export orientation.
