Production of silkworm cocoons in Asia fell from 603 thousand tons in 2018 to 412.5 thousand tons in 2021. Climatic challenges led farmers to shift rearing seasons and adopt temperature control systems in 2019, while the following year saw negative returns from the autumn crop, reducing incentives. Although the value of cocoon exports surged in 2021, domestic output continued to decline.

Output recovered to 442.1 thousand tons in 2022 and reached 459.4 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was driven by research into improved bivoltine silkworm hybrids better adapted to tropical conditions and the spread of integrated technology packages that combined advanced reeling machinery with optimized cocoon drying techniques.

Silkworm cocoon production in Asia has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, Asia produced 442.7 thousand tons of silkworm cocoons, marking a moderate decrease of 8.2% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 32%, which translates to an annualized decline rate of 12.1%.

The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 84.0 tons, which saw the largest decline of 46.5%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a jump of 65.6%.
