Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for raw sheep and lamb skins in Senegal grew from 6 251 t to 8 665 t. The introduction of the Livestock Market Information System (SIM-Bétail) in 2019 enhanced market transparency and efficiency, supporting increased trading activity and contributing to the expansion of domestic supply chains.

Market growth continued through 2021 and 2022, peaking at 9 445 t, sustained by steady production levels and shifts in trade flows that favored domestic availability. This period of expansion was followed by a modest contraction to 9 209 t in 2023, coinciding with elevated sheep prices for the Tabaski holiday, which constrained consumer access and affected skin volumes, alongside government measures to coordinate livestock supply for the festival.

In 2024, further modernization of market infrastructure took place, including the inauguration of new livestock markets and relaxed border controls to facilitate sheep imports, reinforcing the foundation for raw skin trading within the country's ongoing efforts to structure the livestock sector.
