This period of expansion was followed by a modest contraction to 9 209 t in 2023, coinciding with elevated sheep prices for the Tabaski holiday, which constrained consumer access and affected skin volumes, alongside government measures to coordinate livestock supply for the festival.

In 2024, further modernization of market infrastructure took place, including the inauguration of new livestock markets and relaxed border controls to facilitate sheep imports, reinforcing the foundation for raw skin trading within the country's ongoing efforts to structure the livestock sector.

After two consecutive years of decline, Senegal's production of raw sheep and lamb skins rebounded in 2020. The country produced 9 049 tonnes, marking a significant 22.3% year-over-year increase. This followed a low point in 2019 when production dropped to 7 400 tonnes. The most substantial decline occurred in 2018, with a 17.8% decrease.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports declined by 48.7%, with an average annual decrease of 20.0%. The peak was in 2018 at 1 503 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 5.3% that year.

From 2017 to 2020, China, Italy, and Pakistan were the top destinations for Senegal's raw sheep and lamb skins exports by volume. China accounted for 40.1% of exports, Italy for 21.4%, and Pakistan for 20.9%. Together, these three countries represented 82.4% of total export flows.
