Earlier Report Observations
In 2018, the market for raw sheep and lamb skins in Indonesia reached 18 141 metric tons. That year, tanneries in East Java faced raw material shortages as the government tightened imports of raw cattle and goat hides due to foot-and-mouth disease concerns, reinforcing reliance on local supplies. Market volume then dropped to 15 825 metric tons in 2019 and 12 108 metric tons in 2020, before stabilizing at 12 283 metric tons in 2021.
A turnaround began in 2022, when the market expanded to 14 285 metric tons, and growth continued to 14 962 metric tons in 2023. This recovery was driven by government-led initiatives to develop sheep and goat farming, including the Ministry of Agriculture's promotion of large-scale and communal rearing models to boost production and food security. These measures increased the availability of local raw hides. In 2023, rising lamb meat production in key regions such as West Java, Central Java, and East Java further supported hide supply.
