Earlier Report Observations

The market for raw bovine and equine hides and skins in Indonesia expanded to 88 283 t in 2019, driven by a shortage of local raw hides that increased reliance on imported supplies. Earlier quarantine restrictions on imported skins had already tightened domestic supply chains, prompting tanners to seek more foreign raw material.

Market volume contracted to 79 199 t by 2021 after the government introduced stricter quarantine controls on raw hides through Circular Letter of the FMD Task Force No. 3/2022 and issued Trade Minister Regulation No. 20/2021 governing complementary goods imports. These measures constrained logistics and reduced import flows, offsetting a gradual recovery in domestic production.

Despite a widespread outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in 2022, which led to expanded movement controls on raw hides, the market rebounded to 96 889 t in 2023. Growing international demand for semi-finished skins encouraged higher production, while imports rose to compensate for persistent local shortages.
