Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, production of in-shell cashew nuts in Indonesia increased from 147.6 thousand tons to 166.3 thousand tons. This growth was supported by the focused development of cultivation in marginal dry-climate zones, particularly in Southeast Sulawesi, and the adoption of improved farming technologies adapted to climate change to enhance productivity. By 2020, the planted area had reached 479.7 thousand hectares, directly contributing to higher output volumes.

The domestic market volume fell to 87.5 thousand tons in 2019 as exports surged to over 81 thousand tons, underscoring the industry's strong export orientation. However, the market rebounded to 112.7 thousand tons by 2021, driven by growing consumer awareness and demand for healthy, sustainable foods. Small and medium enterprises innovated with value-added processed cashew products, premium packaging, and sought-after certifications like halal and organic to capture this demand.

Market volume peaked at 120.1 thousand tons in 2022 amid continued consumer interest in cashews as a superfood and ingredient. The subsequent decline to 108.1 thousand tons in 2023 coincided with the initial implementation of new National Food Agency regulations concerning food labeling, safety standards, and oversight, which required market participants to adapt their practices.
