Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for raw bovine and equine hides and skins in Mali increased from 7 552 t to 10 607 t. This growth was supported by the country's large national cattle herd, estimated at over 12 million head, making Mali the second-largest livestock producer in ECOWAS. However, limitations in processing, such as outdated equipment and underdeveloped artificial insemination services, constrained the full valorization of hides and skins. In 2020, market volume surged by 33% to 10 607 t.

After the 2020 peak, market volume dropped to 8 058 t in 2021 and further to 6 927 t in 2022, partly due to a rise in exports, which jumped from 365 t in 2020 to 2 204 t in 2022. During this period, the government announced campaigns to strengthen livestock production and launched cooperation projects with Brazil to increase beef production potential, including a visit to an agro-industrial plant with an annual animal feed capacity of 60 000 t. These initiatives aimed at long-term improvement but did not immediately reverse the market decline. In 2023, market volume recovered to 7 510 t as production stabilized around 9 158 t and exports fell to 1 647 t.
