Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the market volume for raw bovine and equine hides and skins in El Salvador showed considerable volatility. It peaked at 4 589 metric tons in 2019 before dropping to 3 902 metric tons in 2020. A recovery followed in 2021, reaching 4 443 metric tons, but the market contracted again in 2022 to 3 723 metric tons and saw a minor decline to 3 647 metric tons in 2023.

The sharp market contraction in 2022, a drop of 16%, coincided with two key developments. Internationally, raw and wet-salted leather prices fell significantly, reducing the profitability of exports and dampening local demand. Domestically, five economic groups with Chinese administrators gained control over the purchase of national leather raw material, leading to hoarding and a collapse in local prices, which further disrupted market dynamics.

The earlier recovery in 2021, when market volume grew by 14%, occurred alongside a reported contraction in the local bovine cattle sector, which may have influenced hide availability. However, by 2023, the market volume showed signs of stabilization, with only a 2% decrease from the previous year.
