The rare gases market in Lithuania experienced significant fluctuations in volume between 2018 and 2024. After starting at 1.49 million m³ in 2018, consumption contracted sharply to 1.27 million m³ the following year. This was followed by a recovery phase, with the market expanding steadily over the next three years to reach a peak of 1.69 million m³ in 2022.

The market's upward trajectory was interrupted in 2023, when volume receded to 1.59 million m³. This decline was temporary, however, as the market resumed growth in 2024, climbing to 1.65 million m³. The period concluded with the market size remaining above its 2018 level, despite the intermediate volatility.

Lithuania's rare gases production value increased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, output was valued at 256.8 K $ US, marking a 65.8% increase compared to 2020. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 32.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 140.9 K $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 27.5%.

Rare gases production volume in Lithuania rose for the second year in a row. In 2021, 912 K m³ were produced, a 2.9% increase from 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, production decreased by 12.2%, equating to an annualized rate of 4.2%. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 812 K m³, which experienced the largest decline of 21.8%. The largest increase occurred in 2020, with a 9.1% rise.

Lithuania's rare gases export volume declined for the third consecutive year. In 2021, exports totalled 311 K m³, a slight decrease of 5.6% compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, exports fell by 53.7%, with an annualized rate of 22.7%.

From 2018 to 2021, Latvia, Russia, and Estonia were the core markets for Lithuania's rare gases exports in volume terms. Latvia accounted for 38.0% of exports, Russia for 23.4%, and Estonia for 20.8%, together representing 82.2% of total flows.

Exports in value, K $ US

After a two-year decline, Lithuania's rare gases export value increased. In 2021, exports were valued at 267 K $ US, a 5.0% year-on-year rise. Between 2018 and 2021, exports decreased by 52.6%, with an annualized rate of 22.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 254 K $ US, which saw the largest decline of 33.9%.

Over 2018–2021, Latvia, Russia, and Estonia contributed the most to Lithuania's rare gases export value. Latvia made up 46.4% of exports, Russia 24.8%, and Estonia 14.5%, jointly accounting for 85.7% of total flows.

Imports rare gases to Lithuania

After a two-year reduction, Lithuania's rare gases import volume increased. In 2021, imports reached 912 K m³, a strong 15.3% rise from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, imports decreased by 18.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.8%. The lowest volume was in 2020 at 792 K m³, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 at 26.1%.

In 2018–2021, Latvia, Poland, and Finland accounted for the largest share of Lithuania's rare gases imports in volume terms. Latvia represented 51.0% of imports, Poland 20.4%, and Finland 19.5%, together comprising 91.0% of total flows.

In 2021, Lithuania's rare gases import value stood at 1 542 K $ US, a steep 25.9% increase from the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, imports grew by 32.9%, with an annualized rate of 9.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 678 K $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 44.5%. The largest decline occurred in 2020 at 27.0%.

From 2018 to 2021, Latvia, Poland, and Austria were the main sources in the geographical breakdown of Lithuania's rare gases import value. Latvia accounted for 45.0% of imports, Poland for 27.9%, and Austria for 14.0%, with a combined share of 86.9% of total flows.
