The rapeseed oilcake market in Africa reached 170 thousand tons in 2018, supported by strong local demand for oilseeds and shifts in crushing patterns, where record soybean processing led to increased imports of sunflower oilcake. By 2019, market volume edged down to 162 thousand tons. It then grew to 178 thousand tons in 2020, aided by higher international sunflower seed prices due to adverse weather in the Black Sea region and a weaker domestic currency, which bolstered local processing competitiveness.

After a modest decline to 172 thousand tons in 2021, the market contracted sharply to 132 thousand tons in 2022. A rapid recovery followed in 2023, with volume jumping to 182 thousand tons; industry reports highlighted steady crush volumes and a focus on domestic consumption rather than oilseed exports.

That year also saw the largest decline of 17.5%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2019 with an 11.6% growth.

Africa's rapeseed oilcake production has increased in value for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 20 584 K $ US, representing an 8.4% year-over-year increase. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 6.5%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 13 567 K $ US, which also experienced the largest decline of 29.8%. In contrast, 2019 saw the biggest increase of 39.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, rapeseed oilcake from Africa was exported to a diverse range of markets. Even the top three destinations—Vietnam, China, and the United Arab Emirates—collectively accounted for only 42.1% of total exports in volume.
