The rapeseed market in Southern Europe opened the period at 470 thousand tonnes in 2018, edging down to 449 thousand tonnes the following year. A sharp rise to 557 thousand tonnes occurred in 2020, driven by increased demand for rapeseed meal in animal feed and the adoption of improved genetic varieties that boosted yield and disease resistance.

Drought in Andalusia reduced yields in 2021, pulling market volume back to 505 thousand tonnes. The war in Ukraine then spurred a price rally and shifted trade flows, leading Spanish producers to expand planted area and lift market volume to 547 thousand tonnes in 2022.

Despite a 35% drop in domestic production in 2023 due to lower prices and difficult growing conditions, market volume climbed to 627 thousand tonnes as imports surged to fill the gap.

In Southern Europe, rapeseed production reached 469.0 thousand tonnes in 2020, marking a 17.6% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 11.7%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 3.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 398.9 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 536.8 thousand tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 25.7%, whereas the largest increase was in 2018, with a rise of 27.8%.

In 2020, the value of rapeseed production in Southern Europe was 251.3 million US dollars, showing a 20.9% gain compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 22.7%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 7.1%. The peak value was observed in 2018 at 254.0 million US dollars. The most substantial decrease happened in 2019, with an 18.2% decline, while the largest increase was in 2018, with a 24.1% rise.

In 2020, Southern Europe's rapeseed exports amounted to 225.9 thousand tonnes, reflecting a modest 8.5% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 3.7%, corresponding to an average annual decline of 1.2%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 208.2 thousand tonnes, and the highest was in 2018 at 328.7 thousand tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a 36.7% decrease, while the largest increase was in 2018, with a 40.2% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, France, and Romania were the primary destinations for rapeseed exports from Southern Europe, accounting for 63.2% of total exports in volume. Specifically, Germany represented 32.3% of exports, France 17.8%, and Romania 13.2%.

In 2020, Southern Europe exported rapeseed worth 121.0 million US dollars, indicating a solid 11.6% year-over-year increase. Between 2017 and 2020, export value grew by 5.9%, with an average annual rate of 1.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 108.5 million US dollars, and the highest in 2018 at 155.5 million US dollars. The most notable decline was in 2019, with a 30.2% decrease, while the largest increase was in 2018, with a 36.1% rise.

Imports rapeseed to Southern Europe

Following a two-year decline, rapeseed imports into Southern Europe rebounded in 2020, reaching 314.3 thousand tonnes, which represents a strong 21.5% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 2.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -0.8%. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 258.6 thousand tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2018, with an 18.7% drop.

The largest decrease was in 2018, with a 17.3% decline.
