U.S. rapeseed market volume declined from 2 058 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 817 thousand tons in 2019, then recovered to 1 996 thousand tons in 2020. A sharp drop followed in 2021 to 1 558 thousand tons, before a strong rebound to 2 240 thousand tons in 2022. The market volume slightly eased to 2 102 thousand tons in 2023, while its value continued rising to $1 677 million.

In 2024, renewable-fuel premium support and improved crop insurance policies encouraged farmers to expand rapeseed plantings beyond 1 million hectares, particularly in North Dakota. This policy-driven acreage increase aimed to bolster domestic supply, while new demand segments emerged with the introduction of rapeseed protein isolates like Puratein for plant-based foods.

The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 644 thousand tonnes, which represented a significant increase of 17.9% from the previous year. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest decline of 5.5%.

In 2020, the value of rapeseed production in the United States reached 1 050 million US dollars, showing a substantial rise of 17.2% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value increased by 6.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 896 million US dollars, reflecting a decline of 11.7%.

Following two years of growth, rapeseed exports from the United States declined in 2020. Exports totaled 146.5 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 39.8% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 6.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.1%. The peak was in 2019 at 243.4 thousand tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 56.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Canada was the dominant destination for US rapeseed exports in volume terms, accounting for 76.2% of total flows, with other markets making up the remainder.

After two years of growth, US rapeseed exports in value terms fell in 2020. Exports amounted to 97.6 million US dollars, a sharp decline of 30.5% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 140.4 million US dollars, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 36.3%.
