Earlier Report Observations

The rapeseed, colza, or mustard oil market in the MENA region contracted significantly from 529.1 thousand tons in 2018 to 227.6 thousand tons in 2023. This decline was primarily due to a sharp increase in exports, which rose from 55.2 thousand tons in 2018 to 451.5 thousand tons in 2023, redirecting supply away from domestic consumption.

Production volumes fluctuated during this period, peaking at 663.3 thousand tons in 2020 before moderating, while imports gradually grew after 2020. The export surge was supported by a structural shift toward shipping non-crude fractions, which gained a larger share of Middle Eastern rapeseed oil trade. Domestic demand for low erucic acid varieties remained steady, but could not offset the outflow to international markets.
