Earlier Report Observations
The soybean oil market in the MENA region experienced notable volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Consumption initially rose from 3 072 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 3 485 thousand tonnes in 2019, then receded to 3 303 thousand tonnes in 2020.
Market volume recovered and grew over the next two years, reaching 3 578 thousand tonnes by 2022. This expansion was primarily driven by global supply disruptions for alternative vegetable oils, such as palm and rapeseed oil, due to droughts and geopolitical tensions, which increased competition for soybean oil and boosted its import into the region. Concurrently, rising consumer preference for non-GMO and organic soybean oil, fueled by health and sustainability awareness, strengthened local demand.
In 2023, the market contracted sharply to 2 917 thousand tonnes, representing a significant correction from the previous peak.
