The market volume for rapeseed, colza, and mustard oil in Malaysia fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023. After an initial drop from 35.3 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 24.8 thousand tonnes in 2019, consumption recovered to 29.5 thousand tonnes in 2020. Growth accelerated in 2021, with the market reaching a peak of 35.9 thousand tonnes. This expansion coincided with record-high export prices, which surged by 44% that year, reflecting strong international demand. The growing consumer preference for rapeseed oil as a natural, chemical-free product further supported increased domestic consumption.

Following the 2021 peak, the market volume contracted for two consecutive years, falling to 27.2 thousand tonnes in 2022 and then to 18.3 thousand tonnes in 2023. The decline in 2022 was accompanied by a sharp 38% increase in import prices for crude rapeseed oil, creating significant cost pressure that likely dampened demand. The downturn continued into 2023, with the market's value dropping by 56.6% and both export and import prices falling substantially, indicating a broader weakening of market activity and demand.

In 2021, the country produced 22 500 tonnes, marking a 13.6% increase from the previous year. Looking back from 2018 to 2021, production rose by 43.3%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 12.7%. The lowest production level was in 2019, at 14 100 tonnes, when output dropped by 10.2%. In contrast, the biggest surge occurred in 2020, with a 40.4% jump.

From 2018 to 2021, exports overall declined by 6.3%, averaging a 2.1% annual decrease. The peak export volume was in 2020, reaching 72 286 tonnes, with a modest increase of 2.0% that year.

Between 2018 and 2021, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Australia were the top destinations for Malaysia's exports of rapeseed, colza, or mustard oil and fractions. New Zealand accounted for 34.3% of exports, the Philippines for 20.6%, and Australia for 17.4%. Together, these three countries made up 72.4% of total export flows.

In 2021, export value reached 108.6 million US dollars, showing a sharp increase of 32.4% compared to 2020. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports grew by 34.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019, at 75.5 million US dollars, when exports fell by 6.6%.
