Production of pumpkins, squash and gourds in Sub-Saharan Africa expanded from 1.6 million tons in 2018 to over 2 million tons in 2020. This growth was supported by active state-level agricultural sectors in key producing countries like Egypt, Algeria, and Malawi. Global supply-chain disruptions during this period also likely encouraged greater local production to meet regional demand.

A temporary dip in output to 1.9 million tons occurred in 2021, even as pumpkin yield saw its most rapid annual increase of 6.2%, pointing to advances in farming techniques. Production rebounded strongly from 2022 onward, reaching 2.2 million tons by 2023. This recovery was fueled by the continued expansion of intra-African trade, facilitated by regional trade policies that boosted exports from Egypt and imports into South Africa.

By 2024, trade flows showed notable shifts: imports of pumpkins into the region contracted by 24.9%, while exports remained robust, led by Morocco which accounted for 63% of Africa's export volume. These changes reflect evolving market access and growing consumer preference for diversified varieties such as butternut and baby butternut squash.

Sub-Saharan Africa's production of pumpkins, squash, and gourds has grown for the second year in a row. In 2019, the region produced 1 573 thousand tonnes, which was the lowest point in recent years. However, by 2020, output surged to 2 015 thousand tonnes, marking a significant 19.1% increase from the previous year. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 23.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.3%. The only decline during this time occurred in 2018, when production fell by 3.7%.
