In 2020, production reached 1,121 thousand tonnes, marking a significant 27.7% year-over-year improvement. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 25.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 829 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 7.2%.

After a two-year uptick, cross-border shipments of pumpkins, squash, and gourds from Eastern Africa declined. From 2017 to 2020, the geographical structure of exports in value terms was highly diversified. Yemen (16.0% of exports), France (5.5% of exports), and the Netherlands (5.3% of exports) together accounted for only 26.8% of total flows, while the remaining 73.2% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.
