From 2018 to 2022, the market for fresh or chilled mushrooms and truffles in Sub-Saharan Africa expanded rapidly, with volume more than doubling from 25 972 tons to 54 326 tons. This surge was primarily driven by a sharp increase in imports, which jumped from 2 947 tons in 2021 to 19 668 tons in 2022, alongside steady growth in domestic production from 24 414 tons to 35 764 tons over the same period.

In 2023, the market contracted to 44 001 tons as imports fell back to 6 155 tons, even though production continued to rise, reaching 39 533 tons. Exports showed a gradual upward trend throughout the period, reaching 1 688 tons in 2023, which slightly moderated net market supply.

Mushroom and truffle production in Sub-Saharan Africa has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 30 042 tonnes, marking a 7.8% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 32.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.9%.

After two years of growth, the value of mushroom and truffle production in Sub-Saharan Africa fell. In 2020, output was valued at 291.9 million US dollars, down 14.3% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 21.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 6.7%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 340.8 million US dollars, with the largest increase that year of 27.8%.

Exports mushrooms and truffles from Sub-Saharan Africa

Mushroom and truffle exports from Sub-Saharan Africa have risen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 674 tonnes, a 6.3% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 48.7%, with an annualized rate of 14.2%.

The export market for mushrooms and truffles in volume terms was highly diversified from 2017 to 2020. The Netherlands, France, and Italy accounted for just 13.4% of total exports, with shares of 7.5%, 3.2%, and 2.7% respectively. The remaining 86.6% was distributed among numerous other countries.

After two years of growth, the value of mushroom and truffle exports from Sub-Saharan Africa declined. In 2020, exports totaled 6 546 thousand US dollars, a 15.5% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 36%, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.8%. The peak was in 2019 at 7 751 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase that year of 45.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export market in value terms was broad, with the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy together making up only 28.0% of total flows. Their shares were 13.7%, 8.0%, and 6.2% respectively. The remaining 72.0% was spread across many other countries.

In 2020, mushroom and truffle imports into Sub-Saharan Africa totaled 1 808 tonnes, a 35.6% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 15.4%, with an average annual decline of 5.4%. The highest volume was in 2019 at 2 808 tonnes, with the largest increase that year of 37.3%.

The import sources for mushrooms and truffles in volume terms were widely dispersed from 2017 to 2020. China, Morocco, and the Netherlands together accounted for just 19.8% of total imports, with shares of 8.7%, 6.9%, and 4.2% respectively. The remaining 80.2% came from a diverse range of other countries.

After two years of increase, the value of mushroom and truffle imports into Sub-Saharan Africa dropped. In 2020, imports amounted to 4 558 thousand US dollars, a sharp decline of 36.8% year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, import value decreased by 27.8%, with an average annual decline of 10.3%. The maximum was in 2019 at 7 217 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase that year of 9.3%.
