In 2018, Honduras' primary sugar crop production stood at 5.5 million tons, supported by 14 operational sugar mills that anchored the sector as a significant employer. Market volume then entered a three-year decline, falling to 4.8 million tons by 2021.

A strong rebound to 5.5 million tons occurred in 2022, followed by a modest reduction to 5.4 million tons in 2023. During that year, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock rolled out a long-term state policy for the agri-food sector, targeting enhanced competitiveness and sustainability. This included the adoption of efficiency-boosting technologies such as drip irrigation systems and drones for crop monitoring in sugar cane cultivation, helping to maintain production at a relatively high level.
