From 2018 to 2021, the soybean market in Honduras showed remarkable stability, with annual volumes consistently around 2 200 t. Domestic production held steady at approximately 2 190 t each year, while imports and exports were minimal, contributing little to overall market size.

A significant deviation occurred in 2022 when the market volume jumped to 2 658 t, driven by a temporary surge in imports which reached 786 t. Although some of these imported soybeans were re-exported, the net effect was a 21% increase compared to 2021. By 2023, imports normalized, and the market returned to its previous level of 2 194 t.

In 2024, public authorities launched substantial efforts to transform the soybean sector. The Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock promoted a plan to produce and process 550 000 t of soybeans to meet domestic demand and generate export surpluses, particularly for biofuels and soybean meal. This initiative focuses on mechanized harvesting, viable only for large farms in specific regions. Concurrently, the market faced challenges including climate change, high input costs, and rural labor migration, which could constrain expansion. The Honduran Agricultural Marketing Institute also allocated funds to purchase basic grains directly from producers, aiming to stabilize the market.
