Earlier Report Observations

Primary sugar crops production in Gabon began the period at 290.5 K t in 2018. That year, the government implemented a new Public Procurement Code to prioritize local small and medium enterprises and launched the Gabon Vert strategy, aiming to increase agriculture's share of GDP. The creation of the Gabonese Food Safety Agency (AGASA) also introduced enhanced controls for local agricultural products, establishing a framework intended to support commodity crops like sugar.

Production then entered a phase of gradual decline, falling to 264.1 K t by 2021. A sharp contraction followed in 2022, with output dropping to 223.5 K t. While the broader agricultural sector reportedly grew by 4.9% that year amid higher oil prices and economic reforms targeting import dependency, this growth did not translate into higher sugar crop volumes. The market rebounded in 2023, with production recovering to 251.9 K t.

In 2024, the government's focus on agricultural development continued. Authorities met with farmer organizations to address operational challenges such as equipment shortages and established the Société d'Agriculture et d'Élevage du Gabon to finance sector growth, signaling sustained efforts to bolster local production.
