From 2018 to 2021, the volume of the unroasted, not decaffeinated coffee market in Gabon declined from 164.4 t to 102.2 t. This contraction was primarily driven by a sharp drop in imports, which fell from 60.0 t to 1.4 t over the period. Government policies under the Gabon Vert strategy aimed at boosting national production of cash crops like coffee and enhancing food security through the Gabonese Food Safety Agency (AGASA) worked to reduce reliance on foreign supply. The introduction of stricter quality control measures for agricultural products in 2021 further tightened import conditions, supporting stable domestic production around 104 t while significantly curtailing incoming volumes.

A notable shift occurred in 2022 when exports surged to 34.5 t, drawing from stable production and low imports, which further reduced the domestic market volume to 74.1 t. This export growth aligned with sustained government investment and better organization of public markets under the economic diversification agenda. In 2023, the market expanded to 107.9 t as imports recovered to 21.7 t and exports moderated to 17.8 t. This recovery was facilitated by new regulations favoring Gabonese small and medium-sized enterprises in public procurement, encouraging new market entrants, alongside reinforced rules on product quality and traceability that shaped trade flows.
