Earlier Report Observations

The primary sugar crops market in Côte d'Ivoire grew from 2.03 million tons in 2018 to 2.1 million tons in 2019, supported by a major public-private investment plan of over 150 billion FCFA and a maintained ban on sugar imports designed to protect local production. This upward trend was temporarily reversed in 2020 when output fell to 1.97 million tons.

Production rebounded strongly to 2.13 million tons in 2021, driven by a renewed joint commitment from the leading companies Sucaf-CI and Sucrivoire to invest 151 billion FCFA to boost cumulative output. The market then stabilized at this level through 2023, supported by the continuous operation of three key processing plants and the availability of consolidated sugar reserves of around 30 000 tons to ensure supply, as seen at the launch of the 2023-2024 campaign.

Sector development continued with the 2024 start of construction on a new distillery by SUCAF-CI, aiming for an annual capacity of 12 million liters of alcohol from molasses, alongside production targets exceeding 127 000 tons of sugar for the 2024-2025 season. These moves are reinforced by ongoing government support to address water management, crop diseases, and climatic challenges, while the import ban remains in place to favor self-sufficiency.
