Earlier Report Observations

Production of primary sugar crops in Central America increased to 117.6 million tonnes in 2019, building on the previous year's level as the region's agricultural sector posted broad growth. This upward movement was interrupted in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted national and international supply chains, leading to a contraction in market volume to 109.3 million tonnes.

Output stabilized in the subsequent period. The push for technological modernization in sugar cane cultivation and industrial processing during 2021 helped maintain production near 108.2 million tonnes. Furthermore, the establishment of a special legal regime for Agroparks in 2022 incentivized domestic and foreign investment in cutting-edge agrotechnologies, supporting a modest recovery to 109.1 million tonnes.

The market volume declined to 105.8 million tonnes in 2023. This reduction was primarily driven by climate variability, including a decrease in rainy days, which negatively affected crop yields and harvested area across the region.
